Early in 1909 a group (34 in all) of like minded golfers formed themselves into the Troon Municipal Golf League. They began their competitive golf in April and played throughout the year in a round-robin matchplay league.

With the newly adopted practice in place, the sweep was cumulative and paid out at the end of the year at the first Annual Business and Social meeting of the League, held in the clubhouse on Tuesday December 29th 1909.

It was at that meeting that the members agreed that the League had been a great success and voted to continue it under the new name of Troon St. Meddans Golf Club.

Arguably the leading light and chief motivator in the creation of St. Meddans was our first Club Secretary Mr. James C. White. For places of honour due in the hundred years of our club few can deserve greater mention.

By all accounts his enthusiasm and drive were instrumental in achieving the early success of St. Meddans and he was held in high regard by all associated with the club.

Following a career in engineering, both at sea and on land, he settled down as a successful club maker attached to the Municipal Courses. His home was on Harling Drive in a house then named Barfad and he clearly lived for his club and his town.
